CENTROPE - Central European Region

The enlargement of the EU has created new opportunities for enhanced integration and collaboration in the border quadrangle between the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria. The Central European Region emerges as a common economic space and place to live in, growing together towards a unique, attractive and strong region furthered by intensive cooperation.

Goals of project CENTROPE

CENTROPE, the Central European Region, is living and working space for about six and a half million people. For manifold reasons, all efforts should be taken to create a prospering European Region, where the existing strengths in economics, society and politics as well as the diversity of languages and culture are utilised for a dynamic development.

Hence, in September 2003, the governors, county presidents and mayors of the border quadrangle agreed upon the joint establishment and support of the Central European Region - CENTROPE. In the framework of an Interreg IIIA project the necessary groundwork was laid to render possible the establishment of CENTROPE as a cross-border region and committing cooperation framework.

CENTROPE is the lead project which develops a multilateral, binding and lasting cooperation framework for the collaboration of regions and municipalities, business enterprises and societal institutions in the Central European Region.

CENTROPE assists in coordinating existing cross-border activities and future efforts for multilateral collaboration, and stimulates new endeavours.

CENTROPE provides for the professional management of interfaces and development processes, in order to generate synergies between as many areas as possible for the benefit of all involved.

CENTROPE mobilises and engages public, commercial and social bodies that wish to contribute to the strengthening of the region as a whole.

CENTROPE is thus concerned with research and training as well as with the economy and the labour market, with regional development, infrastructures, culture, location marketing and public relations work.

Vision CENTROPE 2015

For over two years, experts in all partner regions were intensively concerned with clarifying the possibilities and conditions for the development of a multilateral CENTROPE region. The ‘Vision CENTROPE 2015’, presented to the public in spring 2006, summarises the shared ideas for joint development in this dynamic four-country region. The future agenda will serve as the foundation for the deepening of the cooperation in the upcoming years.
